Pedestrians face danger and risk every time they hit the streets, particularly at night when visibility is not what it is during the day.  Unfortunately, pedestrians have almost no protection against mistakes made by those in moving vehicles, and the results of any mishap can be deadly.  Tragically, a man in Davie paid the ultimate price in a collision with an SUV in Davie last night when he was hit and killed. Fuel Tank Fire in Hallandale Beach Seriously Injures Two Men

Working with fuel tanks is a dangerous line of work, regardless of the extreme levels of precaution that are sometimes taken.  Everyone understands that fuel is a highly flammable substance, and the smallest mistake by anyone involved can lead to disastrous consequences.  Unfortunately, two area workers paid a heavy price for unknown reasons when an empty fuel tank caught fire while the men were working inside of it. Update: Man Killed on Drawbridge Not the First

We posted yesterday about a tragic loss of life that occurred on a local drawbridge when a man was caught on foot as the bridge was raised, ultimately falling to his death.  The story has been updated with questions from the man’s family, and new facts have come to light that show how this person was not the first locally to suffer the same horrible fate.  It seems that this situation is not the first in the area. Drawbridges are quite common in Florida given the seemingly endless list of bodies of water and tributaries the flow through the area.  While these contraptions offer convenience for both land and sea traffic, there are dangers involved with their use.  Tragically, one area man paid the ultimate price for being stuck on a drawbridge as it opened over the Intracoastal Waterway yesterday. Auto accidents that occur at high speeds on the highway almost always lead to disastrous results, especially when traffic conditions are heavy.  Tragically, this appears to be what occurred yesterday on I-95 when a three-car accident led to the death of one of the vehicle drivers and sent four people to Memorial Regional hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries. SUV’s have long been a popular driving choice for American consumers.  Their marketing efforts have led the public to believe that they combine the safety of larger trucks with the smooth ride and comforts of a sedan.  While SUV’s can provide extra safety in certain types of crashes, they have also shown a long-term and dangerous tendency to roll over.  It’s estimated that more than 200,000 SUV’s are involved in these types of crashes in the United States every year, and one local man may have suffered from the same circumstance this morning. When we encourage our children to take part in group activities that include social clubs, academic pursuits and athletic teams, we implicitly if not explicitly entrust those who are charged with handling these activities to do the right thing and to keep our children safe.  Unfortunately, that is not always how things play out, and a troubling story is emerging concerning a former softball coach at Hollywood Christian who has been arrested and charged with the molestation of one of his players. Hit-and-Run Crash Leads to Search for SUV

Hit-and-run accidents always lead to serious problems on several fronts, not the least of which is identifying the person responsible for causing any injuries that result from such a crash.  Unfortunately, such a situation played out yesterday in nearby Pembroke Park, where a motorcyclist was hit by an SUV and was left injured in the street.  Police are now searching for the driver and are asking for help. Anyone who has been driving for any amount of time has surely encountered school buses in the morning and/or the afternoon.  As such, most people would be familiar with the basic regulations in place, specifically the one that deals with stopping when the bus flashes its stop sign in order to provide safety for children getting on or off the bus.  Unfortunately, that warning isn’t always heeded, and when it isn’t, immediate danger results.  Sadly, this appears to be what occurred in Hollywood this morning.
