Auto accidents that occur at high speeds on the highway almost always lead to disastrous results, especially when traffic conditions are heavy. Tragically, this appears to be what occurred yesterday on I-95 when a three-car accident led to the death of one of the vehicle drivers and sent four people to Memorial Regional hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries.
According to the Sun-Sentinel:
“The Expedition and Escalade caught fire in the crash, seriously injuring four of the survivors. They remained hospitalized in serious to critical condition Tuesday morning, officials said.
Lucas and Tyson were not injured, troopers said.
Authorities are investigating whether alcohol or speeding played a part in the Monday evening wreck, which stopped traffic on the highway for five hours, said Sgt. Mark Wysocky, an FHP spokesman.
The crash happened shortly before 5:30 p.m. on I-95’s southbound lanes near the Pembroke Road exit.
Payne, who investigators say drove the Escalade, sideswiped two vehicles and then sped off, striking a Ford Taurus moments later, troopers said.
The Escalade then struck a Ford Expedition that was stopped in the emergency lanes, officials said. Both cars burst into flames, and the Expedition’s driver died at the scene, Wysocky said.
The driver’s remains were so charred, investigators may need dental records to identify the person, Wysocky said.
Possible charges against Payne are pending, he said.”
Clearly, this terrible situation will give rise to claims for civil liability, especially if intoxicants were a factor in the crash.
